Description

This is one of a set of six very fine digital reproductions from the original steel engravings of an etching by W Smith for the 1839 edition of the British Angler’s Manual. This high quality digital reproduction beautifully captures the incredible detail of the original and shows the wonderful workmanship of a master engraver working in the 1830’s. The image shows an angler about to start fishing on Lake Ullswater in Cumbria, England.
The image is 160 by 120mm and is printed on (A4) finest Ilford cotton rag 310 gram paper using the highest quality digital reproduction methods, and archival inkjet inks. The picture is great as a stand alone piece or as part of a display with others from this collection.
All the etchings in this series are from the original artists proofs from a portfolio of original prints we acquired called “The Proofs before Letters”. To our knowledge this is the first time these etchings have been available to the public.
W R Smith was a master engraver who produced his work in the early 19th century. Many of his engravings are now held by major museums and galleries around the world including the Tate in London and the Getty in the US. Originals seldom come available and when they do they sell for a premium.
